3 Health Benefits of Air Conditioning

While keeping your home cool in Richmond's hot and humid summers is a great reason to install air conditioning, this is not the only benefit you will get from a new AC system. This investment could also give you and your family some useful health benefits.

The right air conditioning system can improve your health and make your home a healthier environment to live in. How does this work?

1. Minimizes Harmful Heat Effects

Excess heat can have harmful effects on your health. If your home is too hot and you can't cool down, then you could suffer from heat exhaustion or heatstroke. If you factor humidity into the mix, then things could get worse. If humidity is high, then your sweat can't dry on your skin and cool you down as it normally would.

Even if your home is just a little too hot for comfort, then you might suffer from mild dehydration, headaches, and stress. If you have more serious health conditions, then living in too hot an environment can become a more serious issue.

If you install an AC system, then you can create a cooler environment that helps you stay healthy. It may also help you avoid problems if you have underlying conditions. For example, there is some evidence that people with cardiovascular or respiratory conditions who have air conditioning are less likely to have heat-related problems that might make their conditions flare up and require hospitalization.

2. Removes Air Pollutants

If you do not have AC, then you might have no choice but to open windows to try to get some fresh air circulating around your home when things are hot and steamy outside. However, air is not the only thing that will come indoors.

Air from outside could carry materials like pollutants, pollens, mold spores, and dust. These materials could settle in your home. Once they are inside, you are exposed to them.

If you have allergies or asthma, then you could be stuck between a rock and a hard place. You need to stay indoors to reduce your exposure to allergens; however, things are too hot for comfort inside. You might not be able to cope without opening some windows and doors. However, as soon as you do this, you bring in things that could also set off your allergies.

Even if you do not have specific allergies, local air quality might not be good for you. For example, if mold settles inside your home, then you could start to suffer from upper respiratory problems like colds, coughs, and wheezing. Or, if you live on a busy street, then traffic fumes could be a problem you do not want circulating around your home.

If you install AC, then you get an immediate fix for this problem. You do not have to open any windows to cool things down. So, you can keep harmful materials out of your home.

Plus, if you choose a system with advanced filtration capabilities, such as HEPA filters, then it also cleans the air for you. Even if an allergen were to get into your system or air, these filters would trap it and prevent it from doing any harm.

3. Improves Sleep Quality

Getting a good night’s sleep is sometimes impossible if you are too hot. You toss and turn to try and cool down, but you are unlikely to get a deep and refreshing sleep. If you are lucky, you might doze through some of the night.

While the occasional sleepless night might not do you any harm, long-standing sleep problems can do some psychological and physical damage. A long and hot summer without air conditioning could affect the amount of sleep you get and its quality for a few months.

For a start, you'll feel drowsy and tired during the day. The less sleep you get, the worse you'll feel. This could impair your mental acuity and have a negative effect on your ability to do your job or simple everyday tasks.

Plus, if you're not able to stay alert during the day, then you're more likely to have accidents. You may step into the street because you don't see an oncoming vehicle; you may lose focus when you're driving.

Over time, your health could also suffer. If you don't get enough sleep over a long period, then your blood pressure could increase, your immune system might weaken, and you could even have an increased chance of developing diabetes or heart problems.

If you install an AC system, then you can cool things down at night. It doesn't matter how hot things are outside, you'll still get enough sleep to stay in good shape.
